Be began school at age 5 in England and his family returned to the US when he was 7 years old. The rest of Troyer’s childhood and youth was spent in rural South Carolina. He graduated high school at the top of his small class and continued his education at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, Majoring in Biology. Troyer’s professional aspirations to become a doctor happened at a young age, with “cowboy” being the career path it replaced. Following the completion of his residency, Troyer served in the US Air Force in Montgomery, Alabama and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
In 1995, Troyer completed his military obligation and moved to China Grove, NC to work at a hospital-owned practice. A year later, he was working full-time as an emergency room physician in Hickory, NC. In 1999, Troyer opened his own private practice back in China Grove. Ten years later he sold the practice and took some time off to do mission work in Haiti and make a movie. Troyer Medical opened its doors in 2010 in Landis, NC. A few years after opening this practice, Troyer developed an interest in and became certified to treat patients with addiction issues. This aspect of the practice continued to grow and in 2018, Troyer became one of the first physicians in the country to attain board certification in Addiction Medicine. Currently, Troyer Medical focuses on meeting the primary care and addiction medicine needs of the local community and beyond.
Troyer is married to his wife, Rebecca, and has two grown children (Lindley and Chas), a teenager (Alyssa), and one grandchild (Andrew).
